Criteria for selection for the World Sheepdog Trial
Dogs will be chosen based on the following criteria and must be CBCA registered. Handlers representing Canada must be Canadian or permanent residents of Canada and members in good standing of the CBCA.
Handlers will have until December 31 of the year prior to the World Sheepdog Trial to declare their interest to the board of the CBCA via their director. Successful candidates will be notified no later than January 21 of the year in which the World Sheepdog Trial is held. (This assumes a March 31 deadline for entry, which has been the pattern to date.)
Spots will be allocated in this order.
- The first spot will be offered to the CBCA Champion.
- The second spot will be offered to the CBCA Reserve Champion.
- The third and fourth spots will be offered to the top USBCHA pointed handler from the East and the top pointed handler from the West who indicated interest by Dec 31, using the points for the qualifying year of the USBCHA National Finals held in the year prior to the World Sheepdog Trial.
- If the Champion or Reserve Champion declines their spot, those spots then go to the CBCA membership at large, to the dog(s) with the next highest USBCHA points, using the points for the qualifying year of the USBCHA National Finals held in the year prior to the World Sheepdog Trial.
- If the top pointed Westerner or Easterner do not accept the spots offered, the spots then go to the CBCA membership at large, to the dog(s) with the next highest USBCHA points.
If Canada were to receive additional spots, the remaining spots would be allocated to the CBCA membership at large by USBCHA points, as described above.
The CBCA board is responsible for giving final approval that all handler and dog teams that will be put forward to represent Canada are capable of that level of work and will represent Canada well.
Note: If a handler has two dogs that qualify to run for Canada based on the criteria above, he/she can enter and run two dogs at the World Sheepdog Trial. The qualified dog must be the dog entered in the World Sheepdog Trial. Currently, by ISDS World Sheepdog Trial rules, handlers may also designate an alternate dog to replace their qualified dog in the case of injury.
